The Saltgrass Band at Spring Creek Music Weekend
October 23-25 2008
"Saltgrass entertained four sets during the festival, with lots of good music.  Friday evening they had a Big surprise for all of us.....No, Jim Lowery did not annoy the audience, or appear as Elvis.... (we hope he will do that another time,) the whole group was in on the surprise ..... Saltgrass had a fiddle playing with them...,  Jeff Hagan, from Navasota, TX.  He appeared out of the blue in the campground..., they got acquainted and he fit into the group perfectly!  Saltgrass would like for him to join the band, but Jeff is an  airline pilot, working most weekends. Maybe we will see him with Saltgrass again from time-to-time."  "Saturday Saltgrass continued..., 'Martha White Song.' 'Them Blues,' etc.  It was pretty serious music, then, Buddy Brockett took the stage with he and Jimmy Fischer performing their amazing, two men on one banjo routine to the tune of 'Ruben.'  Back to serious music, and the three J's... John, Jim, and Jimmy as a trio 'Take This Hammer.'  Jeff fiddled 'The Maiden's prayer,' and 'Fox On The Run,' another trio tune,  featuring the 'girl' singer, John Brockett 'Erase The Miles.'  Saltgrass' encore this set 'Little Black Train.'  Saturday night, Buddy Brockett began their last set whit his humorous hissing snake story."  From the Spring Creek Bluegrass Club Newsletter by Ruth Westbrook, Spring Creek Special Events.

THE SALTGRASS BAND

The Saltgrass Band is based in Lake Jackson, Texas and has played bluegrass music for many years. We try to include a mix of traditional and contemporary bluegrass music with every performance. There is always a gospel song or two and maybe a couple of funnies during the performance.

The current members of the band are:

Jimmy Fischer - banjo, guitar, vocals. Jimmy lives in Lake Jackson, Texas. He has been in the group about 25 years. His "driving banjo technique" provides a foot stompin' sound that few can duplicate. He writes many songs. Just recently, he wrote Stars, Stripes Tattered and Torn. This is the title song of one of their CD’s.

John Brockett - guitar, vocals. John lives in Magnolia, Texas and has been with the group about  20 years. His superb tenor voice will definitely get your attention, whether the song is an old bluegrass classic or a mellow gospel tune. John's rhythm guitar playing is terrific. He knows where the "sweetspot" is on his Martin D-28 Guitar.

Jim Lowery - bass, vocals. Jim lives in Spring, Texas. and has been in the group about 14 years.  He does most of the M.C. work. His bass playing holds the rhythm and is rock solid.

Timmy Fischer-mandolin, vocals. Timmy lives in Lake Jackson, Texas and has played with the group about 6 years. He provides another great vocal as well as some fine guitar and mandolin picking. He loves to sing and play bluegrass.

Jeff Hagen-fiddle. Jeff lives in Navasota, Texas and is the newest member of the band. Although he may not be able to make every appearance, because of work schedule, he will make most gigs and his fiddle playing is worth listening to.  He is one of the best.

The Saltgrass Band has made live radio and television performances as well as numerous personal appearances in Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma.
